Our Legacy
In Memorium
Bart Starr
The Sanders Trust fondly remembers football legend, colleague, mentor, business partner, and most of all friend, Bart Starr.
In 1989, Bart Starr and Rance Sanders founded Starr Sanders Properties, which immediately established a national footprint, from Florida to California. Bart worked closely with Rance on a daily basis, cultivating development and acquisition opportunities and relationships.
As the company continued to grow, it evolved in the late ‘90s to become The Sanders Trust and Bart would go on to serve as its Vice Chairman.
Bart was widely known for his and his wife, Cherry’s, selfless philanthropy. They helped found the Rawhide Boys Ranch in 1965 (which still exists today, having saved thousands of at-risk youth and families). They have also contributed their time and resources to The Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, Children’s Hospital of Alabama, The Humane Society of Birmingham, and Cornerstone Schools for disadvantaged children.
“From dear friend, mentor, childhood hero, to business partner, Bart taught me untold lessons on life, people, hard work, and grace. From Presidents, Senators, Governors, CEOs, movie stars, NFL Hall of Famers, or regular fans, Bart treated everyone with kindness and respect. I hear the word “gentleman” used to describe him, but his character was even broader. He genuinely cared about people and believed the best in them,” says Rance.
The Sanders Trust sends its deepest condolences to the family of the former University of Alabama and Green Bay Packers football star. As Bart left this world, he did so in peace, his faith intact, and having always trusted in the goodness of humanity.
E. Leon Sanders
The Sanders Trust fondly remembers Leon Sanders, board member and advisor to The Sanders Trust. Leon was the founder, President, and CEO of Jefferson Title Company, which he started with just 2 or 3 employees and grew into an entire building.
Leon’s professional career began with Lawyers Title Insurance Co. in Birmingham. He graduated from Birmingham School of Law in 1966, passed the Alabama State Bar, and founded Jefferson Title Corporation with investment partner Mississippi Valley Title Insurance Company. He ran the company with tenacity, long hours, service dedication, and good judgment for hiring excellent people. In 1985, Leon was honored as Dixie Land Title Association Title Person of the Year, having served as its president in 1980. Jefferson Title prospered for over half a century.
Leon’s interests extended beyond Jefferson Title. He taught at Birmingham School of Law and was a member of Lester Memorial Methodist Church, The Club, Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity, Limestone Springs Golf Club, Alabama State Bar, and the Birmingham Bar Association.
